Áine Ní Chíobháin is an artist born in Cork City with family roots in Corca Dhuibhne. She has been living and working in Corca Dhuibhne, since 2007 and has an Honours Degree from Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork City. Her artwork is found in many public and private collections including Dingle Hospital, HETAC, and Kerry County Council, Ireland. She is a recipient of numerous awards including bursary awards, project awards, and residency awards from Ealaín na Gaeltachta (Arts Council of Ireland & Údarás na Gaeltachta), Kerry County Council and Cork Film Centre. Recent successful solo exhibitions include Gormley’s Fine Art, Dublin (2018), Áras Éanna, Inis Oírr and Cill Rialaig Art Centre, (2016) as gallery hosts. The artist is a past exhibiter of Impressions Biennale, 2013 and the RHA 182nd Annual Exhibition, RHA Gallery, Dublin. Áine is currently an artist in residence in An Díseart, Dingle.

Artist's Statement

When I resonate with an image, I attempt to encapsulate its essence through drawing, print and mixed media paintings. The work is visceral, with knitted lines and distressed surfaces. I like to explore traditional mediums and the dichotomy of my urban and rural upbringing. At times I amplify my findings with new media techniques. The pieces develop further when all references are put away.

Artworks are enriched by back-stories, field trips and investigations into the meaning of people and place. With copperplate etchings, there is an element of surprise that I enjoy. As I develop my processes I draw more and more from memory and imagination.

For me art is a compulsion to connect with my surroundings, and create a sense of place. The process of making art is born out of innate curiosity and excitement at phenomenal occurrences around me
