Claude Hayes

Claude Hayes, born in Dublin in 1852, was a landscape and portrait painter. The son of maritime artist Edwin Hayes, he ran away to sea at an early age before training at Heatherley's in London and at the RA Schools. He later studied in Antwerp under Charles Verlat, and first showed at the RHA in 1874. In 1876 he exhibited at the RA - a connection that would last 40 years. He was elected to membership of the RI in 1886 and the ROI in 1883.

He is best remembered for his pastoral scenes, and landscape works. His work is in various public collections in England and Ireland including the Ulster Museum and the Leeds City Art Gallery.
