ffrench, John
Born in Dublin in 1928, John ffrench began his artistic journey at the National College of Art and Design and
the Istituto Statale D'Arte in Florence. With ancestral roots at Castle ffrench near Ballinasloe, he first
showcased his talents in 1948. Over the years, his career flourished, leading to exhibitions in Dublin,
Florence, Calcutta, Reykjavik, New York, Frankfurt, and beyond.
John’s work spanned the globe, with significant contributions to studios such as Brogi Studio in Florence,
Ring Ceramic Studio in Kilkenny, West Bengal Design Studio in Calcutta, and Dolphin Studio in
Massachusetts. As a visionary in Irish studio pottery, he founded Arklow Studio Pottery in 1962 and later
established his own studio near Kinvara, County Galway.
John passed away in 2010.
